Magnetic Building Toys: Comparing the Brands
Two different toys, both called "magnetic building"
"Magnetic building toys" actually covers two different mechanisms, and knowing which is which matters more here than for most toy categories, because pieces from one system don't connect to the other. Flat-tile systems (Magna-Tiles, Mideer) use geometric tiles — triangles, squares — with magnets along each edge, so kids build flat walls, towers and enclosures that snap together face to face. Rod-and-connector systems (SmartMax, Geosmart) use magnetic rods and ball or node connectors, so kids build at angles and in 3D — domes, spheres, moving vehicles — rather than flat walls. Within our collection, Magna-Tiles and Mideer are both flat-tile systems built to the same common shape standard, so pieces from the two often click together — but we'd still recommend checking two actual pieces side by side before mixing large sets, since exact tolerances can vary by production run. SmartMax and Geosmart are a different mechanism entirely and don't connect to either tile brand.
Magna-Tiles: the widest range, flat-tile building
The original flat-tile brand and our largest range in this category — strongest pick if you want the most set variety to grow into over time.
- MicroMAGS Travel, 26 Pieces, 3+ — a compact travel-sized set.
- Castle, 25 Pieces, 3+ — themed around a castle/princess build.
- Safari Animals, 25 Pieces, 3+ — tiles shaped and printed as animals.
- Builder, 32 Pieces, 3+ — a transport-themed building set.
Mideer: more themed sets, same flat-tile mechanism
Also a flat-tile system, with a strong focus on themed, characters-and-story sets — a good pick if your child is drawn to a specific theme rather than open building.
- Colorful, 60 Pieces, 3+ — a large general-purpose starter set.
- Jurassic Adventure, 3+ — dinosaur-themed pieces.
- Tiles City Hero Squad, 33 Pieces, 3+ — superhero/city theme.
- Set Mini, 42 Pieces, 3+ — a compact set, good for travel or a second set.
SmartMax: built for toddlers, before flat tiles make sense
A rod-and-connector system designed to be safe and easy for hands as young as 1 — the pieces are larger and the connection is a simple click rather than a flat magnetic face, which suits toddlers who aren't ready for flat-tile building yet.
- My First Vehicles, 1+ — vehicle-themed building for the youngest builders.
- My First Farm Friends, 1+ — animal-themed, same mechanism.
- My First Safari, 1+ — another animal-themed starter set.
- Build Start+, 30 Pieces, 1+ — a larger general starter set.
Geosmart: 3D geometric construction, for older builders
A rod-and-node system built around geometric shapes rather than vehicles or scenes — spheres, domes and spinning constructions, aimed at older kids who want a real engineering-style challenge.
- Magnetic GeoSphere, 31 Pieces, 5+ — builds a geometric sphere.
- Magnetic Solar Spinner, 23 Pieces, 5+ — a spinning, space-themed build.
- Magnetic Lunar Rover, 30 Pieces, 3+ — a vehicle build, slightly younger entry point into the brand.
We also carry a small Imanix range — Cubix, 50 Pieces, 3+ is a similar rod-and-connector construction set, worth a look if you want to compare a third mechanism.
Which brand to choose
- Under 3, first magnetic toy → SmartMax. Larger pieces, simpler connection, built for younger hands.
- 3–7, want the widest range to grow into → Magna-Tiles. The most sets and expansion options in our range.
- 3–7, child is drawn to a specific theme (dinosaurs, superheroes) → Mideer. Same building mechanism as Magna-Tiles, more story-driven sets.
- 5+, wants an engineering-style challenge → Geosmart. Builds real 3D geometric shapes, not just flat walls.
- Mixing brands → stick within mechanism (Magna-Tiles + Mideer tiles; never mix tiles with SmartMax or Geosmart rods).
